A tale of the complications of love, Heidi Jon Schmidt weaves the effects of marrying someone who isnt the right fit and the agony of discovering "the one" a moment too late.
The protagonist, Charlotte, uproots her family and plants herself into a place where she is undoubtedly the outside, no matter how hard she tries to fit in. As she fights to do what she feels is right, she struggles against a community who views her as an intrusion and a bother. Their contempt for her is only heightened by her apparent and almost flagrant disregard for her unlikeable husband.
The outsider motif rides effortlessly through all the parallel story lines within the novel without exhausting the reader. From her standoffish Henry to the "hard done by but overcoming" Darryl, Charlotte's existence in Wellfleet is painted in the characters of all who live there. It is a summer-y read that is entrancing and charming.
